Faced with the daunting task of designing and administering a program to "certify the certifiers", IAFCA looked for someone with experience and
found it in the prestigious National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE).
NSPE has, through its National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET), been providing certification programs in engineering technologies since 1961. One of the first steps for IAFCA was to become a member of the National Organization for Competency Assurance (NOCA), which offers its members assistance in certification programs through seminars, publications and a rigorous program approval process administered by its National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). By committing itself to the guidelines set forth by NCCA and NICET, IAFCA has managed to gain approval from certifiers and end users alike. Fortunately for IAFCA, NICET saw that we had reached them through a series of meetings with other related certifying organizations and that we were sincere in our quest for an internationally-acceptable program of unquestionable standards. NICET now administers IAFCA's exams, along with its other engineering exams, at over 120 colleges and universities throughout the US. IAFCA utilizes a similar system of proctored sites in Canada.
IAFCA anticipates universal acceptance of this program as the benchmark by which biosafety cabinet certifiers are judged.
